Clothing -- and the Cosmos!

January is a big month for predictions -- and for looking ahead for what will be trendy in 2014. With good reason: that wonderful cocoon coat on the sale rack may be a steal, but will you still love it a year from now? (Read on for the answer!)

I use astrology to predict the hits and misses. After all, trends are cyclic and astrology is the study of cycles, with the movement of the planets reflecting evolution back on terra firma. And in the roughly 4,000 years this cosmic art/science has been around, a lot of trends have crossed the ol’ astrolabe.

Astrologers look to the planets farthest from the Sun -- that is, Jupiter through Pluto -- when tracking universal trends. As each planet orbits the Sun, it is sequentially “clothed” in one of the zodiac signs. The farther out the planet, the longer it wears a sign: Saturn for over two years, Uranus about seven, and so on.

Much as you behave differently when donning some comfy sweats than you do when dolled up to hit the clubs or boardroom, a planet’s basic nature undergoes some changes when it switches signs.

Let’s take Jupiter, the feel-good planet of optimism and fun. I find its movements coincide with more fleeting trends, as it only stays in a given sign for a year or so. Jupiter slipped into something Cancer in late June 2013. This is a homebody sign, so cocoon shapes reflect not only this sign’s favorite pastime but need to have a nice big shell.

It’s also why we’re staying in our jammies, as in the pajama-dressing trend that originated on the fall 2013 runways at Louis Vuitton and Rochas to Burberry and Marc by Marc Jacobs -- and is everywhere for spring 2014.

As for that large, oversized cocoon-shape coat: Jupiter will be garbed in Leo as of July 2014. The Lion loves exaggeration, so your coat will still be in style through early winter 2015. But you’ll likely also want a slinky gold trench by then, too!
